Small Business Website UK: What You Actually Need to Get Online

A good small business website in the UK does not need to be complicated. It needs to load quickly, work on a phone, and make it obvious what you do and how someone hires you. That is it. Most of the sites I see that are failing are not failing because they lack features. They are failing because they try to do too much and forget the basics. Here is what actually matters when you build a small business website, and what you can safely ignore.

What a small business website is really for

Before you think about design, be honest about the job. For the vast majority of UK small businesses, the website has one purpose: turn a stranger who found you into an enquiry, a booking, or a sale. Every decision should serve that. A beautiful site that buries your phone number is worse than a plain one that shows it in the header.

Write down the one action you most want a visitor to take. Call you? Fill in a form? Buy something? That action should be visible without scrolling, on every page.

The pages you genuinely need

You can launch a strong small business website with five pages or fewer. Adding more later is easy. Starting with too many is how projects stall.

Home

Say who you are, who you help, and where you work within the first screen. A visitor should understand your business in five seconds, not five paragraphs.

Services or products

Lay out what you offer in plain language. Skip the jargon. If you serve a specific area, name the towns, because that is what people search for and it helps you show up locally.

About

People buy from people, especially with small businesses. A short, human page with a real photo builds more trust than a page of corporate filler.

Contact

Make it effortless. Phone number, email, a simple form, and your area covered. Do not hide behind a single contact form with no other option.

Getting the technical basics right

You do not need to understand the plumbing, but you should insist on a few things from whoever builds your site.

Speed

A slow site loses visitors before they read a word. Google also uses speed as a ranking signal, so a sluggish site costs you twice. Large uncompressed images are the usual culprit. A well-built WordPress site with tidy images and sensible hosting should load in a couple of seconds.

Mobile first

More than half of UK web traffic is on phones, and for local businesses it is often much higher. If your site is awkward to use on a mobile, you are turning away the majority of your visitors. Test it on your own phone before you sign it off.

Findable on Google

Basic search visibility is not magic. It comes from clear page titles, honest descriptions of what you do, naming the areas you serve, and a site that loads fast and reads well. Get those right and you have covered most of what a small business needs to start appearing in local searches.

What to skip for now

Plenty of features sound impressive and add cost without adding customers. In the early days you can usually do without live chat, booking systems, membership areas, and elaborate animations. Launch something clean and useful, see how people actually use it, then add features when there is real demand. A lean site that exists and works beats an ambitious one that is stuck in development.

Keeping it simple and affordable

The trap many owners fall into is treating the website as a one-off grand project rather than a practical tool. You want it done well, done quickly, and at a price you can see before you commit. For most UK small businesses, a handful of well-built pages on WordPress is exactly the right scope.

If that sounds like what you need, you can get a professional small business website built for a fixed £400, designed on WordPress and delivered in two to three days. No open-ended hourly billing, no drawn-out timeline, just a clean site that does its job and lets you get back to running the business.
