How Much Does a Freelance Web Designer Cost in the UK?

The Real Cost of Hiring a Freelance Web Designer in the UK

If you’re a small business owner trying to figure out how much a freelance web designer in the UK actually costs, you’ve probably seen wildly different numbers. Some say £500. Some say £5,000. A few claim you can get a “professional” site for £99. So what’s the real answer?

I’m a freelance web designer based in the UK, and I’ll give you the honest breakdown. No fluff, just real numbers and what you actually get for your money.

Freelance Web Designer UK: Typical Price Ranges

Here’s what you can expect to pay a freelance web designer in the UK in 2026:

  • Budget (£200 to £500). A simple but professional WordPress site. Usually 3 to 5 pages. Good for sole traders, tradespeople, and local service businesses. This is where I sit. I charge £400 fixed.
  • Mid-range (£800 to £2,500). More custom design work, possibly some custom functionality, e-commerce basics, or a larger site with 10+ pages.
  • Premium (£3,000 to £10,000+). Fully custom design, complex e-commerce, membership sites, booking systems, or anything that needs bespoke development.

Most small businesses in the UK genuinely need something in the budget to mid-range bracket. Unless you’re running an online shop with hundreds of products, you probably don’t need a £5,000 site.

What About the Freelance Web Developer Hourly Rate in the UK?

A lot of freelancers charge by the hour. The typical freelance web developer hourly rate in the UK ranges from £30 to £100 per hour, depending on experience and location.

London-based developers tend to charge more. Someone with 10+ years of experience might charge £80 to £100 per hour. A newer freelancer might charge £25 to £40.

Here’s the problem with hourly rates though. You never know what the final bill will be. A “simple” website that was supposed to take 10 hours can easily balloon to 25 hours once you factor in revisions, content changes, and the inevitable “can you just…” requests.

That’s why I prefer fixed pricing. You know exactly what you’re paying from day one. No surprises, no anxiety about the meter running.

What Affects the Cost?

Several things push the price up or down:

Number of pages. A 3-page site is cheaper than a 15-page site. Simple as that.

Custom design vs templates. Starting from a proven layout and customising it to your brand is much faster (and cheaper) than designing everything from scratch. And honestly, for most small businesses, the result looks just as good.

Content. If you provide all your text and images, the designer just needs to build. If they need to write copy or source photography, that adds cost.

E-commerce. Adding a shop with product listings, payment processing, and shipping calculations is significantly more work than a standard brochure site.

Ongoing maintenance. Some designers include a few months of updates in their price. Others charge a monthly retainer. Make sure you know what happens after launch.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

The website build fee isn’t the only cost. You’ll also need:

  • Domain name. Around £10 to £15 per year for a .co.uk domain.
  • Hosting. Anywhere from £3 to £30 per month depending on the provider and plan.
  • SSL certificate. Most hosts include this free now, but check.
  • Premium plugins. Some functionality requires paid plugins. A good designer will tell you upfront if any are needed.
  • Email. If you want a professional email address (like hello@yourbusiness.co.uk), that’s usually a small monthly cost through your host or Google Workspace.

All in, you should budget roughly £500 to £600 for your first year including the website build, domain, and hosting. After that, it’s just hosting and domain renewal, which is usually under £100 per year.

Is It Worth Paying More?

Sometimes, yes. If you need complex functionality, a large product catalogue, or tight integration with other systems, paying more makes sense.

But for a standard small business website, the 5 to 7 page brochure site that tells people who you are, what you do, and how to get in touch. You really don’t need to spend thousands.

A skilled freelancer with a clear process can deliver a site that looks great, loads fast, and works on every device for well under £1,000.
