How Long Does It Take to Build a Small Business Website?

One of the most common questions I get asked is simple: how long does it actually take to build a website? It is a fair question. If you run a busy small business, you want to know what you are committing to before you start.

The honest answer is that a straightforward small business website can be live in one to three weeks. But that timeline depends on a few things, and most of them are within your control. Here is exactly what shapes it.

The Short Answer

For a typical small business website of five to ten pages, the build itself takes most designers between one and three weeks. A simple brochure site with your services, an about page and a contact form sits at the shorter end. A larger site with a blog, galleries or online booking takes a little longer.

The single biggest factor is not the design work. It is how quickly you get your content to the designer. More on that below.

What Actually Happens During a Website Build

Stage 1: The Initial Conversation

Everything starts with a chat about your business, your customers and what you want the site to achieve. This usually takes a day or two to arrange and about an hour to run. A good designer uses this to understand what will bring you enquiries, not just what looks nice.

Stage 2: Gathering Your Content

This is the stage that decides your timeline. Your designer needs text, images and your logo before the real building can begin. If you have this ready, things move fast. If it takes you two weeks to send over your photos, your website takes two weeks longer. It really is that simple.

Stage 3: Design and Build

Once the content is in, the designer builds the site. For most small business websites this takes a few days to a week. You will usually get a draft link partway through so you can see it taking shape and give feedback early.

Stage 4: Review and Revisions

You review the site, check every page on your phone and your computer, and flag anything you want changed. Most designers include a round or two of revisions. This stage takes a few days, depending on how quickly you send your feedback.

Stage 5: Launch

When you are happy, the site goes live. Your domain is connected, the security certificate is set up, and everything is tested one final time. Launch itself is quick, often the same day you approve the final version.

What Slows a Website Down

  • Slow content. The number one cause of delay. Photos, text and logos that take weeks to arrive push everything back.
  • Changing direction late. Deciding on a completely different look halfway through means redoing work. Getting the direction right early keeps things moving.
  • Waiting on third parties. If you need photography, copywriting or a logo designed first, factor that in.
  • Complex features. Online shops, booking systems and membership areas add time. A standard brochure site does not.

How to Get Your Website Live Faster

  1. Prepare your content before you start. Write rough notes about each service, gather your best photos, and find your logo file. Even rough text is enough for a designer to polish.
  2. Give clear, specific feedback. “Make the heading bigger and use our blue” is far more useful than “I do not like it”.
  3. Reply promptly. The faster you respond at each stage, the faster you are online.
  4. Trust the process. A designer who builds small business sites regularly knows what works. Let them guide you.

Why Waiting Costs You More Than Time

Every week without a website is a week where potential customers search for your service, find your competitors, and call them instead. The build might take two weeks, but the cost of not starting adds up every single day.

Most business owners who put off getting online say the same thing afterwards: they wish they had done it sooner. The process is quicker and simpler than they expected.
